The Hagia Sophia, the biggest church constructed by the East Roman Empire in Istanbul, has been constructed three tmes in the same locaton. When it was frst built, it was named Megale Ekklesia (Big Church); however, afer the ffh century, it was referred to as the Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom). The church was the place in which rulers were crowned, and it was also the biggest operatonal cathedral in the city throughout the Byzantne period. In this labyrinth there are 60 streets and 4,000 shops with each trade having its own area: the goldsmiths' street, the carpet sellers, Turkish arts and crafs, such as handpainted ceramic plates, hand-honed copperware, brassware and trays, water ewers, onyx-ware and meerschaum pipes Visit to Topkapi Palace was one of the major residences of the Otoman sultans for almost 400 years (1465–1856) of their 624-year reign. As well as a royal residence, the palace was a setng for state occasions and royal entertainments. It is now a museum and as such a major tourist atracton.
